Uchechukwu Nwodo (Ph.D)
Is a Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Faculty of Science and Agriculture. He is currently serving as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and also served various as visiting researcher at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany, Bowen University, and Edo State Polytechnic, respectively in Nigeria.
He has more than 15 years of research experience in microbiology and biotechnology and leads the Patho-Biocatalysis Research Group (PBG) with a focus on the valorization of waste to high-value products, bacterial pathogenic gene ecology, and novel lead compounds from natural sources. Prof Nwodo is also the leader of the Infectious Disease and Medicinal Plants Research Niche Area (IDM-NA) recently established by the University of Fort Hare. Prof Nwodo has published over 100 journal articles, developed 6 prototypes, and trained over 30 postgraduate students at master’s and doctorate levels. He participated in several internationally financed projects, including NRF and MRC.
Prof Nwodo has been a member of the Council for the South African Society for Microbiology (SASM). His society membership includes the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM), and the Federation for European Microbiological Society (FEMS). He is an NRF-rated researcher.
Prof Nwodo is the Deputy Dean – Research and Internationalization, Faculty of Science and Agriculture. He served as Head of Department, Biochemistry and Microbiology. He has active research and student training collaborations with the University of Ottawa, Canada, University of Cairo, Egypt, University of Tunis, Tunisia, Kyonggi University, South Korea, and the University of Tromsø, Norway. He recently established collaborations with the Federal University of Paraíba, Brazil, and ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre, New Delhi, India under a joint BRICS multilateral project.
